Frequently Asked Questions
How much fabric for a simple dress?
A basic sleeveless dress takes 2-2.5 yards of 45" fabric for most sizes. Add 0.5 yards for short sleeves, 1 yard for long sleeves. Maxi dresses need 3-4 yards. Plus-size patterns may need 0.5-1 yard more.
Do larger sizes need more fabric?
Yes. Size XS might need 2 yards where size XXL needs 3 yards for the same dress pattern. The difference is usually 0.25-0.5 yards per size category. Always check your pattern's fabric requirements for your specific size.
What about directional prints?
Fabrics with a one-way print (like flowers that should all face up) need 10-15% more fabric. All pattern pieces must be laid out in the same direction, which limits cutting efficiency. Check your pattern for 'with nap' yardage.
